INBETWEEN, MABAYN ATHNAYN / 2024

Research of the
Third Space

︎This project will be exhibited at the Dutch Design Week 2024 (19-27.10.24) ︎

“Baguettes and msemen, raves and wedding parties, Asics and Babouches. I want these pairs to understand each other, to be discussed and thought about together.”

Through photographic work in Morocco, Olfa Rachdi explores her French-Moroccan cultural hybridity, working within her interpretation of the “Third Space”. For Rachdi, it is a space that emerges when north-african and european cultures interact, challenging mono-cultural identities and allowing for the reinterpretation of their imagery.

In “Mabayn Athnayn, Inbetween”, Rachdi distorts her photography of Morocco and screen prints it onto leather, layering them to display the intersectional lens of her mixed cultural heritage. In expressing her full nuanced self, it explores the complexities of identity in contemporary society.
